Description

Startslow - Anthropomorph EP

The 'Anthropomorph' EP takes Startslow's bass-heavy, intensely microprogrammed sound to another place entirely. This time round, Startslow collaborated with a variety of vocalists, including the soulful singers Louise Coady of Kloudbreak and Miele Passmore of Coup, as well as the MCs 'the Sticklepath Bandits'. It's a bit mellower then previous releases, drawing influence from Trip-Hop, Hip-Hop, jazz and the more downtempo vocal side of Dubstep. The schizophrenic element so prevelent in previous work is still evident though, especially in the title track which combines snarling bass lines, deep subs, spikey rhythms and jagged sax stabs - there's even some recorder in there somewhere.

Reviews

"Yeah, this EP is great. I love the track 'Edges of the Sun' the most, and the treatments on 'Tortu' are really artistic." - FriedMyLittleBrain.com

"Very diverse and interesting new four track digital EP by occasional Mothboy collaborator and Drawn Recordings manager Startslow. Kicking in with a rather science-fiction sounding, instrumental dubstep tune which combines playfulness and heaviness, "Anthropomorph" then steers towards more accessible territories with two jazzy and trip hop tunes focusing on female vocals (including one featuring the singer of the always underrated Kloudbreak) and a grime one thrown in to make sure everybody wakes up. Very well produced, unassuming and very pleasant." - Ad Noiseam
